ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
(Notes from presentation in 2005, of the Verde Valley Forum- Part 1, featured speaker Mark Lautman, chair of New Mexico Economic Development Commissionl; sponsored by CBRC, APS and Yavapai College.)

Ways of going about it:

Strategic Precription (Plan- designed with keeping the end in mind)

      Tactic reaction (Well reactive plan)

      Organized delusion

      Deter

Always important factor:

ROI- Return on investment; always necessary to prevent failures

Why the economy is different than before:

It is more complicated and continues to get more complicated

      There are conflicting paradigms/words

Not everyone is on board. You need to identify:

               Critical thinkers

               Planners/visionaries

Doers- Habits is jumping ahead with not all the info, analysis, research

New processes are put into place to narrow down choices

You must always work with the end goal in mind

       Organizational inertia

               Logic versus practicality

What is necessary for quality essentials in an economic plan:

The eco-system must be in balance, jobs/growth/population

Affordable housing for the average worker

The economic base must grow faster than the population

Health care must be available and affordable

Good schools must be producing good students

What you must have for success:

       Clarity- of purpose and mi

Define your efforts from beginning, then end, then middle

A path- Define, write your path in figures, spreadsheets, processes

Action- Follow through with defined plans/dates

Major forces:

        Aging population nationwide

        Premium driven housing inflation

        Changes in the economic base

Changes in the work force demands

        Foreign competition

        Depletion of natural resources

Rural Community Realities

The world economy is changing and shifting which affects local communities

America is not currently well positioned for change

Locally- Uncompetitive, lack of qualified/educated people, lack of universities

        We need to constantly ‘re’-invent

The Pitfalls

Strong and false sense of well-being

High percent of revenue base in a lot of areas is construction

Solutions

        Think logically

        Make long-term projections

Watch and understand the world economy

BEST PLAN- Be ready for change

        Learn to define “Base”

Keep focused on plan. It’s easy to get sidetracked

Write a plan, secure financing for plan, work the plan

Write a matrix, track plan and results

We need to work together!!!

LEST WE FORGET……… its all about the kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
